Cilas Santos, Brazil

This grantee is still in the process of their leadership development with the JWH initiative.

In his community of Miranda, Brazil, Cilas stands out as a leader among his peers. He is actively involved in the organization Fisherfolks’ Association of Miranda (APAIM), where he is the local coordinator responsible for the APAIM’s projects for local development, social enhancement, and quality of livelihood. Cilas is an advocate for “fisherfolks’ rights” and is actively seeking a better life for his community, through promotion of environmental protection and nature conservation. Cilas played an important role in obtaining an ice factory for the APAIM, with the support of the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture in Brazil, generating benefits for his whole community. Furthermore, he was directly responsible for the monitoring of best practices for the “collection of live-baits” at Miranda, which contributed greatly to the ongoing ecosystem protection and sustainability efforts in the region.

With the help of his JWH Initiative grant, Cilas first plans to finish his high school diploma, and then further his education through completion of courses on information technology, accounting, and project management. As a young leader obtaining new skills, his education will enable him to lead his organization with even more confidence, and to be able to stimulate and encourage proper implementation of projects at a local level.
