Evodius Rutta, Tanzania

This grantee is still in the process of their leadership development with the JWH initiative.

Rutta is the founder and Executive Director of the Tanzania Youth Environmental Network (TAYEN), an NGO that unites youth through engagement in environmental education and conservation programs concerning issues like climate change education, tree planting, and waste management. Under the leadership of Rutta, TAYEN has recruited more than a thousand young members from schools and universities in Tanzania to support environmental conservation initiatives. This program builds a sustainable generation that will address environmental conservation and sustainable development problems for current and future generations. Additionally, Rutta and his NGO support the Tree Planting program, aimed to tackle deforestation and climate-changed induced problems. TAYEN has planted nearly 10,000 trees in rural and urban areas in Tanzania!

Eager to develop personally and professionally, Rutta will use his JWH Initiative grant to pursue a Master’s of Science in Natural Resource Management at the University of Dar es Salaam in Tanzania. This program will equip Rutta with solid skills in natural resource management, with the intent of increasing his ability to manage large scale natural resource projects for TAYEN and its partners. In the long term, Rutta would like to complete PhD studies in the field of climate change and natural resource management, and he hopes the opportunities provided by the JWH Initiative grant will be a perfect springboard for reaching these commendable goals. Rutta’s projected career path will certainly bring much-needed expertise and action to the fields of climate change-related challenges and natural resource management issues within Tanzania.
