Ly Van Loi, Vietnam

This grantee is still in the process of their leadership development with the JWH initiative. This profile will be completed once the grantee has finalised their activities.
Ly Van Loi is a young Vietnamese from the Mekong Delta region. Ly has shown interest in contributing to environmental improvement from a young age; as a student he founded the 3R (reuse, reduce, recycle) club. Aside from currently pursuing a higher degree in environmental Management he is also one of the founders of the Deltas Youth Alliance (DyA). Located in Can Tho University, DyA has around 50 members coming from various fields and locations in the Mekong Delta. Cooperation is key to DyA’s existence, their motto being “sharing ideas (and) changing lives”. Members share experiences with each other in order to improve their knowledge on the work they do in their region concerning environmental development. As network manager, Ly manages DyA’s website, Prepares and participates in workshops, and also offers programs for the youth on environmental development.
Ly’s NGO is relatively new and in need of expertise to properly grow and contribute to the underprivileged region of the Mekong Delta. In order to do so he first needs to improve his environmental leadership qualities. Already halfway into his leadership development program, Ly has invested his JWH Initiative grant in English courses at the British Council in Ho Chi Minh City. His improved English can now assist him in attending international forums and meeting people from all over the world. At the University of Nature Science in Ha Noi, Ly followed courses on using special computer software such as “ArcGIS”. This program will help him use geographic data to manage his NGO, human resources and protect his region’s biodiversity. His last activity will involve participating in a field trip with the Mekong School in Chiang Mai city, Thailand. Aside from learning about the environmental issues of Thailand, Ly will also give a presentation about the Mekong Delta and the local youth from his region. Ly and his NGO will surely grow from his improved English, his computer skills and his field trip.
