Abhishek Shrestha

Nepal

Abhishek Shrestha is a young climate activist passionate about youth, climate policy, development, sustainability and governance. He holds masters in Climate Change and Policy. He is a Co-founder of the Nepalese Youth for Climate Action and played an instrumental role in building the youth climate movement in Nepal. Currently he works for the Climate Justice Programme of the Digo Bikas Institute (DBI) based in Kathmandu. The DBI is a research and advocacy organization committed to promote ecological sustainability and social equity at policy and community level.

The JWHi grant supports Abhishek’s endeavours to build a sustained network, share stories from Nepal, and exchange ideas and work in collaboration with CSOs working on the issues of the sustainable development, renewable energy, movement building and climate change. For that reason he will – in April 2017 – attend a ‘Vikalpa Sangam’ which is Hindi for ‘Alternatives Confluence’ where people from various initiatives come together to celebrate, learn, synergize and have discussions and dialogues on ecological devastation, inequalities, and social conflicts to be held in Kerala, India. The aim is to investigate if the ‘Vikalpa Sangam’ model can be used in Nepal.

Earlier – in February 2017 – he conducted a learning visit and field trip to Greenpeace New Delhi and visited Dharnai, India’s first fully solar powered village. In May and June 2017 he participates in a two-week workshop called the Nayi Dishayein Summer School on ‘Rethinking Development’ by the Sambhaavnaa Institute of Public Policy and Politics in Kandbari village, Himachal Pradesh, India. The aim of the workshop is to critically examine the current notion of ‘Development’.
Finally in November he intends to attend the UNFCCC COP and People’s COP at Bonn, Germany.

Abhishek is convinced all these activities will enrich his understanding and knowledge on ecological sustainability, sustainable development, and indigenous knowledge on environmental conservation. Thus supporting Abhishek’s dream of building a strong community of CSO’s and young people working on development, environmental and climate change issues.
