Suong Truong Hong

Vietnam

Truong Hong Suong who works with the An Giang Farmer’s Union in the Mekong Delta, intends to have an Internship with the International Rivers’ Southeast Asia Office in Bangkok from March 1 to September 1, 2017. Suong will conduct research on public participation issues in regional water management policy and, through mentorship from International River staff, will learn how to use her research findings for public policy advocacy.

As an intern she has the opportunity to work closely with senior campaigners to raise personal capacity to organize communities to address the impacts of mainstream Mekong dams on Vietnam’s Mekong Delta. Suong will conduct research on public participation in regional water management policy, and will collaborate in campaigning activities such as the Save the Mekong initiative and the International Day of Action for Rivers.

Through Suong’s research and work experience, she hopes she will become better acquainted with the threats currently facing Mekong Delta communities in the form of climate change, upstream dams on the Mekong River, and the intensification of local water management schemes.

After her return to the Mekong Delta she plans to promote environmental justice and sustainable development, and to apply the lessons learned during her internship to her youth advocacy work.
